Overview for Submitting Photos

In celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary the Vancouver Public Library will be hosting a Story City project online. This is the area where you can learn how to submit photos. If you wanted to tell your story in a recording, please go to this page.

The Story City project invites everyone to submit their personal photos of community members, events, places, and family in Vancouver. The photos can include locations, buildings, events and people that are important to you and the your community in Vancouver. You can appear in the photo or the photo can be of another person. These submissions may be included in our online Story City related exhibits on the This Vancouver website, an upcoming VPL map website, or in a downloadable VPL neighbourhood tour app. The exhibit will ensure that each community and neighbourhood's important history in Vancouver is captured and shared for others to enjoy.

If you would like to submit a photo, please follow the instructions under How to Submit. To ensure a chance for everyone to participate, there is a maximum of 3 photos per person. There is no minimum. We are only collecting digital copies of the photos so please contact us if you would like help learning how to make a scan of your photos.

Photo Submission Requirements
Please make sure your photo meets the following criteria:

  • Minimum photo dimension: 650 X 850
  • Minimum Resolution: 200 dpi
  • File format: JPEG or PNG
  • Maximum JPG size: 5MB

Your right to use the photo (copyright etc.)
Not the photographer? Make sure you have permission from the original photographer, and let us know if that person wants to be named as the creator.
Are there people in the photo? In Canada you actually need permission from someone to publish their photo. Please get permission from the subjects of your photos (exceptions: public figures, deceased persons, unrecognizable persons and crowd shots).
By submitting a photo you are stipulating that you have the right to publish it. You are also giving permission to those photos to be used by the library in other contexts, such as publicity and promotion.

How to submit

To submit your photo, please click here to e-mail CDI@vpl.ca. Please answer the following in the e-mail:

  • Your name:
  • E-mail:
  • Phone number (in case we need to contact you about your submission):
  • Are you the photographer, or that you have permission from the photographer to publish their photo online?
  • Title for your photo:
  • A short (no more than 150 words) description of the photo:
  • Date and location the photo was taken (or your best guess):
  • Names of the people featured in the photo (if you have permission to publish the photo and identify them):

Other rules for submission:
Only one photo per email submission. Please include the requested information for each photo for each email.
VPL cannot guarantee that all submitted photos will be included in the online exhibit.
